A Promise to the Stranger

A Promise to the Stranger
Trust before knowledge
Tiuri pledges to protect the letter before he knows its contents or the stranger’s full identity. The promise is based on the need presented to him.
A commitment with consequences
The pledge pulls him from the vigil and begins a journey that costs comfort, safety, and his expected knighting. His word becomes the structure of the mission.
A Promise to Edwinem

A Promise to Edwinem
The charge renewed
Edwinem asks Tiuri to swear on his honor that he will bring the letter to King of Unauwen. Tiuri gives his word despite the dangers ahead.
The mission made personal
The promise binds Tiuri to a dead knight he barely knows. He continues even when others suspect him and even when the message remains incomprehensible.
The Promise to Marius

The Promise to Marius
A smaller obligation
Marius asks Tiuri to return and tell him what lies beyond the forest. Tiuri agrees, treating the request as sincere rather than trivial.
A return detour
After completing the royal mission, Tiuri remembers the promise and visits Marius. Keeping this word shows that the journey’s value includes relationships beyond its political purpose.
Piak’s Promise

Piak’s Promise
A guide’s undertaking
Piak promises to guide Tiuri and stay alert while he sleeps. He sees the task as partly his own because Menaures entrusted it to him.
Loyalty without ownership
When Piak later wants to stay in the mountains, Tiuri releases him from the assumption that a promise requires permanent companionship. Their friendship honors honesty as well as commitment.
A Knight’s Promise Renewed

A Knight’s Promise Renewed
The oath spoken
After Dagonaut knights Tiuri, Tiuri promises to serve the king and subjects, use his sword for good, and protect the weak. The words now follow lived experience.
A vigil completed
He leaves the banquet to keep the remaining night watch. The choice closes the circle of his original promise while beginning a longer duty.
